Fresh homemade , healthy food for dogs

It’s that part of the week again

I have a new homemade dog food recipe for you

I do a lot of reading/researching on my days off and I love sharing where I get all my information.

You might be considering jumping on board and start making your fur kids meals and not sure where to start ? Is it worth it ? What to buy ? What is safe ? Etc.

All of the same questions I had when I started this journey. I decided that I wanted to commit feeding my fur kids homemade dog food about 8 months ago , I think it’s been that long ? But I’m so happy I did and now I wish I’ve been doing this from the beginning of their little lives .

But I’m here to help you get started , support you , give you free recipes , advice and important information along the way .

I do my weekly dog food shopping mostly at my local Walmart . My two fur kids are small , so shopping for them I spend about $100 a month , give or take . So depending on how many fur kid(s) you have or their size , you’ll have to determine what you need . It’s a trial and error journey , so you’ll know what exactly you’ll need and what you won’t need eventually , just stick it out .

Don’t forget that it is important to discuss with your veterinarian which vitamins and supplements your fur kid(s) need too . I’ll list what my fur kids use and what works for us at the end of this read.

Besides our basic understanding of fresh foods being “better” than processed foods, here are some of the proven benefits of a fresh dog food diet. Nom Nom Blog source

  • Longer life.

People ask me if they should add more protein or add more vegetables. I try and stick to this ratio . 40% protein, 50% vegetables, and 10% starch. You can read more here Ratio/portion source

So now that I’ve shared some new information with you , let me jump into this weeks recipe.

Ingredients :

  • 5 lbs of skinless/boneless chicken breast
  • 6 lbs of sweet potatoes
  • 2 lbs of frozen mixed vegetables
  • 2 lbs of frozen peas
  • 7 apples

Directions :

  • In a large pot , boil chicken for 15 minutes, or until no longer pink and then shred and place back into the pot and set aside
  • While boiling your chicken , you may steam your frozen mixed veggies on top of this pot, or steam all frozen mixed veggies and frozen peas separately ( whichever makes your life easier )
  • Chop up 7 apples into small pieces and steam these until tender .
  • Cut off the ends of the sweet potatoes and in another large pot , boil them with their peel until tender ( about 20 – 30 min ) then rinse them with cool water until you can handle them to peel them
  • Once everything is cooked , add everything back into the big pot with the shredded chicken and mix well
  • Then just scoop out 2 cups of your homemade dog food per 1 quart ziplock back for storage ( you can freeze if you have more then a weeks worth but this specific recipe for 2 small dogs will last 8 days ) so it’ll be refrigerated instead . So I leave about 2-3 days worth in the fridge and freeze the rest , then just microwave the ziplock bag for about 4 minutes at each feeding ( always freeze the rest to keep meat from spoiling)
Each quart ziplock bag holds 2 cups of prepared food ( they eat 1 cup each , 2 times a day ) morning time between 9-11am and dinner time between 4-6pm ( treats/snacks in between )

Don’t forget that your fur kids need calcium too ! I use Calcium powder from Amazon ( use as directed )

Make sure you add in their daily vitamins and supplements. Right now they are sharing a bag of soft chews ( daily vitamins and minerals for adult and senior dogs ) from Nutri Vet and a Omega 3-6-9 food supplement that promotes healthy organs and coat .

Hope you found this blog helpful and informative .

Here’s to happy & healthy long lives with our fur kids
